I'd love to see the working class exactly where everyone enters town. What the poor are supposed to be out Of sight out of mind? That's silly. We all work hard in our own ways to be here and all have equal right to be visible and present.

Decide on a meeting place date time. Get the word out. Radio, posters, word of mouth...local galleries, coffee shops, watering holes...neighboring communities may be of great assistance as well.
Billy and mike both were excellent at putting the word out and rallying for support. Lets follow in that example to bring something worthwhile to This community.

So, for those of us that are in favor of the school area being used for the arts, how do we get together and get our voices out there? The kids joined forces and got a skate park... can't we all join together and at least try for this??? I bet we could get a lot of people in the community (that don't visit this chat room) to get involved and help us. Anyone have a a great idea??

That's public property, and the public should think about how it will be used in the future. One option is to put it on the market and sell it off to private developers. Other options should be considered. Many schools provide artists in residence as part of their academic curriculum. Art is a central feature of Cannon Beach. We should welcome ideas for nourishing that part of our community. Even if, after earnest consideration, those ideas are deemed impractical.

the City Of Cannon Beach does not own the land the school is on. They could purchase it but nobody is going to give it to them. It is doubtful the city would want to buy it because it is going to be expensive. Also, artists and "arts communities" are generally not very high on the income ladder so how in the heck can anyone expect them to buy it for "artist housing" unless some wealthy patron or XXXXX No - No WORD FILTER XXXX er grants a sh1tload of money for it. Just because the school is going to be moved it doesnt mean that ground is going to be abandoned. If you look around this county and see what has become of former school property you will understand what is going to happen. Once the school people have signed it off it's in the realm of the private developers. Then it's between them and local planning commissions just what is going to happen.

As part of the mix of possibilities, our little arts colony might consider investing in affordable rental housing for resident artists. That should be on the table when discussing potential futures for the elementary school. High art is sometimes accompanied by low income.

Seriously! LOW INCOME is shunned at the head of town. NO ONE WANTS IT TO BE THE FIRST THING WE SEE WHEN WE COME INTO TOWN! LISTEN TO THE WORDS COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH!! I WOULDN'T WISH THIS ON ANYONE!!!!!!!!! It should represent our artistic original community. Low income can be another thing on our to-do list somewhere else not infront of the whole town.

It will likely be the high income housing option because city and county make more on the property taxes.

So what about the low income housing option. That could be even more of a eyesore than the confrerence center buildings that crowd the visual aura as we come into town. But it could look ok and we certainly need more low income dwellings that house citizens since all the other low income housing in the county has become filled with illegal aliens.

Last night at the Legion might have been an end-of-summer ritual, but instead was another small tribute for our friend in the heavens. The music was wonderful and the musicians made it truly special. It was quietly all for Michael. We must come together and make sure, REALLY SURE we honor the dream of Billy and Michael. We can do this. We must save the part of this community that is ours, and the part that makes this town truly special. We're a town of artists! And we must continue to have our voices heard wherever the home is.
Miss you already Michael. I imagine you and Billy are once again having your infamous long chats together.

why not leave the school land alone to be open space. opebn space is a nearly extince commodity especially around the water and such. I know its unrealistic since everything must be measured in terms of production or economics but It sounds like the best idea in light of the state of our town as well as the reasoning behind abandoning the location as a school.

REPOSTING FOR CLARITY:
Speaking as a low-income member most of my childhood and experiencing the strong under belly of criticism, I can honestly say it would NOT be a good location for low-income housing.
I grew up on the same street where the school is located. It should represent our community. Our original artistic community:)

Another view. Are you aware that the CBCC holds large amounts of children, parents, teachers, artists, students, visitors? Are you aware the Sea Ranch holds large amounts of visitors? Are you aware BREAKERS POINT holds large amounts of partitime visitors? Are you aware alot of the vacation homes are in even more of a dangerous location than the school? Are you aware that the entire community is in the tsunami zone? Are you aware that all the hotels in town hold large amounts of visitors and WE ALL WOULD NEED TO DO THE SAME THING no matter where one is standing in the community. YOU HEAR THE MOO, start walking to higher ground. **ENTER CANNON BEACH AT YOUR OWN RISK***

If a bad tsunami hit, we would walk up the hill like we have always done. The moo horn goes off and we march. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.00. Build a better bridge if one is concerned.

I would vote for the low income housing , considering how many people working in the service industry now have to commute from outside Cannon Beach.
But its in a highrisk tsunami zone.
so the park and cultural center is a good option. I just don't like the idea of a building that holds a large crowd, and possible sleeping quarters , to be exposed to the same hazard.
So how about just a park, and some badly needed parking?
in the event of a tsunami, you lose some cars . Better than lives.

Thanks to Jeff and others for posting news about Michael Burgess. I was at home yesterday, and didn't hear about it until last night. I'm thunderstruck.
I believe the best way we can come together to continue the local legacy of Uncle Mike and Reverend Billy is to support cultural/arts education as part of the future of the elementary school.

An Important Message from TAC
The citizens of Cannon Beach are being presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity: the much discussed and long awaited fate of Cannon Beach Elementary School is being decided by the city planning commission. Three of the options are: a park; a park and affordable housing; a park and high density housing. Although no one would argue against the need for affordable housing in Cannon Beach, it’s the fourth option that represents the real opportunity for the city: a combination of park and cultural center.
If “cultural” includes the arts, the existing buildings could easily be adapted to provide studio and classroom space as well as lodging for visiting artists and artists in residence. Such a facility would be a magnet for local, regional and national artists and could revive the energy of the now defunct Haystack Program. Cannon Beach has long enjoyed a reputation as an “arts community”; today, it could be more accurately described as a gallery community. Art is an experience that ends in a gallery; it begins with people doing art. With a cultural/arts center, Cannon Beach could be, once again, a place where art is made, not just sold.
Whatever plan is adopted, it should include preserving the gymnasium: the largest performance space in the city. Tolovana Arts Colony has staged three concerts in the gym. Our experience showed that, with acoustic baffles hung from the ceiling (an inexpensive installation), the gymnasium would become a concert hall suitable for everything from chamber music and chanting Tibetan monks to touring dance companies and theater in the round. To lose this room before it has a chance to be what it can be would be worse than a shame.
Please let your voice be heard. We won’t have a chance like this again.

We've Lost a Great Man
If you haven 't heard, Michael Burgess passed on to a greater place this weekend.
The Concert in the Park was dedicated to him today.
What a beautiful day and very sad day. It was appropriate that Bond Street Blues Band was performing, as he knew and loved them a lot.
We all shed lots of tears and great memories. It was the largest audience ever for
a concert. Uncle Mike would have been proud. Our mayor did a nice intro
to the concert and I thank him.
Don't fear, the Tolovana Arts Colony will go on with our work and goals.
We need to come together now more than ever to do this.
It will be tough as hell, but we will go on.
